North Alabama Birding Trail

This is a trail that I stumbled upon about 2 years ago. There are 50 birding sites across North Alabama. Some of the sites are places like Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, Russell Cave, and Goose Pond Colony. There are lots of much smaller sites.
We spent a year following the trail. Many of the sites are on or near Highway 72. Oftentimes there are 2 or 3 sites close together. We saw dozens of species including the following water and shore birds - herons, seagulls, kingfishers, kestrels, ospreys, and many different kinds of ducks.

You can get a small brochure at Wheeler Refuge, but you can get a better, bigger and more detailed booklet at the Huntsville Madison County Visitor Center on Church Street. They don't have them out, but if you ask they will get you one from the back room.

You can also check it out at www.NorthAlabamaBirdingTrail.com

It is a great way to "do" science class!
