1pm Arrive by 12:45 to have money collected and ready for prompt start time

To all Marines, and friends and family of Marines...

To all Marines, and friends and family of Marines...

You are cordially invited to join us May 1st at the 3d Annual Semper
Fi Community Task Force Open house, to be held at the Raytheon
Building, 401 Jan Davis Dr (1.5 miles west of the Bridge Street
Complex on Old Madison Pike). We've gathered local Marines together
for this forum each year since 2007, and along with the Marine Corps
Ball, it is one of those truly inspirational events not to be missed.

Esprit de Corps will be in order as we enjoy the company of fellow
Marines and spouses during the Social Hour which will begin at 5:30
PM. Refreshments and heavy hors d'ouevres will be served.

Following the social, at 6:30 PM, we'll update you on the successes of the Task Force in 2008, and the plans we've made for 2009. And we'll be honored to hear from our special guest, Col Dave Hilmers, USMC (Ret). Dave was a Naval Flight Officer (A-6s) and NASA Astronaut/Mission Specialist who flew 4 Space Shuttle missions. After retiring from NASA, he went to medical school and now serves as a Doctor of Pediatric and Internal Medicine. His commitment to serving others as a Marine, astronaut, and
now as a doctor in Houston, TX is truly amazing, and he's coming to share his story with us.

It promises to be quite an evening.

Cook Natural Science Museum

Neat place to take kids in Decatur (maybe before or after the skating...):
the Cook Natural Science Museum, a free museum in Decatur http://www.cookspest.com/museum.html

The museum is free. There are a couple of things on their website you can download before you go. Depending on your kids' interests, you might want to plan 30 minutes to an hour for the museum.

Skate Day in Decatur May 1

The monthly homeschool skate day sponsored by NACHO is coming up. All homeschoolers are invited to attend. May's home school skate day at the Decatur Skate Castle will be this Friday, May 1, from 12:00 – 2:30 pm.

Families may bring their used curriculum to sell. We use one of the party rooms to display books. Please bring an envelope or some other means of collecting money unless you plan to stay with your books.

We also typically have a free, optional, half hour mini class for moms during the skate time. This month's class will be on low cost/no cost activities and travel ideas for families this summer. The ladies who are doing this class are real experts on traveling and learning on a shoestring budget.

We will be skating to contemporary Christian music. Admission cost is $3 (this includes rental fee) per child ages 3 and over whether they skate or not. Non-skating moms and those 2 and under get in free. If you would like low top skates or roller blades there will be an additional $3 charge. Those paying to get in will receive a free small coke. The lunch choices will be hot dog\chips\drink or one slice pizza\drink – either choice is $1.25. Here is a link to the Skate Castle's website if anyone needs additional information: http://www.myrivertown.com/skatecastle/mainpage.htm.

Hope to see some of you there!

Heritage Children's Chorale (POSTPONED)

Heritage Children's Chorale has been postponed. Was to be Monday, May 4th at 7:00 pm at Providence Baptist Church in Huntsville. New Date to be determined.

Seventy beautiful children's voices sing praises to God in a concert open to everyone to attend. This chorus began 21 years ago and is still under the talented direction of Mary Stephenson. Comprised of two chapters (Pulaski, TN and Athens, AL), the group combines for four concerts a year. Fortunately this year, one of them is close by at Providence Baptist Church at 1355 Douglass Rd., 1/2 mile west of Jeff Rd. The Chorale has performed with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, as well as single performances with Amy Grant, Donna Summer, and Christian artist John Starnes. Over the years, the Chorale has travelled our country extensively and been invited overseas multiple times. This is a free concert; donations are accepted, but there's no pressure individually to give. No need to register; just show up. Approximately one hour.

Opal Performance this Friday morning (April 24)

Looking for a neat Friday morning field trip? Plenty of seats are still available for the April 24 (yes, this Friday) 9:30am performance of the musical "Opal" at Church of the Performing Arts located at the corner of Johnston St. and 4th Ave. in Decatur.

"Opal" is set in the early 1900's and is based on the life of Opal Whitely, who was born the daughter of a French aristocrat. A much-anticipated voyage to America turns to tragedy and this young girl suddenly finds herself an orphan in an unfamiliar world. Because she speaks very little English, she is put on an "Orphan Train" and sent to the lumber camps of Oregon, where she must adjust to a new life so different from the one she had known.

The roles of Opal and of two narrators are played by homeschoolers. (I hesitate to list their names in a mailing like this.) The role of Mrs. Potter is played by a homeschooling mom.

Tickets for Friday, April 24 9:30am are $5.00 per student. Teachers (mom) are admitted free of charge.
Please call Aprille Flemons at 256-778-0449 or 256-340-4665
or call Backstage Theater Company at 256-309-0041
by 5pm Wednesday April 22 if you are interested, otherwise this particular performance may need to be cancelled.
Tickets for other performances will be $10 for adults and $8 for students.
Other performances will be held at 7:30 pm on April 24, 25, May 1, 2, 8, 9;
and at 2pm on April 25, May 2, 9.

National Parks

For the Fuller Family, some of our favorite trips have included stops at our country's National Parks. We have driven thousands of miles to Yellowstone and Death Valley, hundreds of miles to Big Bend and The Great Smokey Mountains, and just over 50 miles to Little River Canyon and Russell Cave. If we are crossing the country or the state, we love checking out National Parks.

At most parks kids can become Junior Rangers. This is a program set up to help the kids learn more about the parks in a fun way. They have a booklet of activities to complete. When they finish the book, they turn it in to a ranger and get a patch or a pin. Our kids have done dozens of these programs, and they LOVE them!

We love the Parks even when we can't travel to them. We visit the website of individual parks and do research, play games, print activities, and more. There is an almost endless amount of historical and scientific information.

So whether you are planning a trip, or just looking for more information, check out

USLI Rocket Launch --- April 18

If you like model rockets, make your way out to Bragg Farms in Meridianville (1180 Grimwood Rd, Toney, AL 35773) Saturday, April 18, 10am to 5pm.

There will be universities and high school teams there participating in the University Student Launch Initiative (USLI) competition.

The goal of the competition is to build a rocket that will reach an altitude of 1 mile, take scientific data, and survive. The rockets put on a good show when they work right, and a sometimes spectacular show when they don’t…

The UAHuntsville team - “Charger Rocket Works”. Their entry this year is the “Osprey” .

For those interested in it:

The Osprey is made of carbon fiber and stands a little over 8 feet tall.

Onboard are:

· Three flight computers

· GPS

· Multiple accelerometers (3-axis)

· A pitot static probe (for velocity measurement)

· Load cells and strain gauges on the motor casing

· Camera that sends a live feed back to our trailer with GPS coordinate overlay

Homeschool Quotes

Ok, so we've only just begun this blog, and I'm already going off-topic!

But this seemed like a good place to put this link to quotes related to homeschooling...I'm sure there are some here somewhere that have to do with field trips!: http://www.squidoo.com/homeschoolquotes

Such as:
"There is more to life than increasing its speed." Gandhi

"I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn." Albert Einstein

"Nobody is bored when he is trying to make something that is beautiful, or to discover something that is true." William Inge

"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." Mark Twain

“Try not to have a good time…this is supposed to be educational.”
- Charles Schulz

North Alabama Birding Trail

This is a trail that I stumbled upon about 2 years ago. There are 50 birding sites across North Alabama. Some of the sites are places like Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, Russell Cave, and Goose Pond Colony. There are lots of much smaller sites.
We spent a year following the trail. Many of the sites are on or near Highway 72. Oftentimes there are 2 or 3 sites close together. We saw dozens of species including the following water and shore birds - herons, seagulls, kingfishers, kestrels, ospreys, and many different kinds of ducks.

You can get a small brochure at Wheeler Refuge, but you can get a better, bigger and more detailed booklet at the Huntsville Madison County Visitor Center on Church Street. They don't have them out, but if you ask they will get you one from the back room.

You can also check it out at www.NorthAlabamaBirdingTrail.com

It is a great way to "do" science class!

Welcome to CLC Field Trips

Born out of a brainstorm session between Cathy, Dee, Jill, and a new homeschooling mom! Our objective here is at least two fold -- to let you know of great educational opportunities in the greater Huntsville area (you know, Nashville, Chattanooga, Birmingham, and the likes!) and to give you a place to ask questions about those or share more information.

We obviously don't know ALL of the cool places within 100 miles of here that you might want to take your family to, but between the 3 of us we know LOTS!

Stay tuned for some great Field Trip Suggestions!
